In 1961, the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Board of Trustees voted in favor of relocating the school's campus from the city of Rochester to the suburbs of Henrietta. A New Campus Fund was established to help raise money for the project. As the campaign drew to a close, many contributors wanted to continue to give to the college on an annual basis. Alfred L. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
